Behind the rhythm of the railway station and the city's ever-changing skyline lies the Nairobi Railway Museum, a quiet keeper of stories that helped shape not only Kenya's transport history, but the story of Nairobi itself.

Here, old locomotives rest beneath the open sky. At the same time, vintage communication equipment, railway memorabilia and historic coaches offer visitors a glimpse into an era that transformed how people, goods and ideas moved across East Africa. Walking through the museum is, in many ways, a journey through Kenya's history, from the railway's construction and the colonial period to independence and the evolution of modern rail transport.

But perhaps that is the beauty of heritage tourism. It invites us to pause, look back, and understand that the places we call home today were built on stories, journeys and moments that came before us. This week, we travel to the foothills of the Aberdare Ranges, where one man's dream grew into an unexpected tourism experience in the small town of Wiyumiririe.

This feature takes us behind the medieval-inspired walls of this unique attraction, where art, recreation, culture and community come together against the backdrop of the Laikipia plains.

🏰 But perhaps the most fascinating part of the story isn't the castle itself. It's what the dream has made possible.

✍️ Utalii Bora Thursdays

This week's feature takes us to the heart of the Aberdare ecosystem, where nature isn't just something to admire, but something to experience. Imagine flying more than 100 metres above the forest canopy, reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h on a zipline, then swapping the adrenaline rush for archery, cycling, nature walks, fishing, or even planting a tree. The Forest at Kereita offers adventure with a distinctly green backdrop.

But beneath the thrills, Sharon Wangari found another story worth telling. Kereita Forest is managed by a local community forest association, with conservation woven into the visitor experience. From tree planting and recycling to responsible management of the forest environment, the experience showed that adventure tourism and sustainability don't have to exist on opposite sides of the spectrum.

And perhaps the most telling observation from this 2017 review? The number of Kenyan visitors enjoying the experience, a small but encouraging sign of the growing interest in domestic tourism.

We are saddened by the passing of Baraka, the belo

We are saddened by the passing of Baraka, the beloved blind black rhino of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, who died at the age of 31.

Born at Ol Pejeta to his mother, Carol, Baraka was among the first black rhinos ever born on the conservancy. After losing his right eye in a territorial fight with another male and later losing sight in his remaining eye to cataracts, Baraka faced a very different life.

Rather than leave him to struggle in the wild, the Ol Pejeta team brought him into a protected enclosure where he received the care and nutrition he needed. Over the years, Baraka became much more than a resident at Ol Pejeta. He became a symbol of resilience and a gentle ambassador for rhino conservation.

For countless visitors, including students from our partner schools in Laikipia who had the opportunity to encounter him during conservation education trips, Baraka made the story of rhino conservation deeply personal. His legacy will live on in every person he inspired to care a little more deeply for rhinos and the wild places they call home.

Rest in peace, Baraka. 🦏❤️
