When you think of Mombasa, what comes to mind?

For many, it's the white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and endless coastal sunsets. But tucked away just a few kilometres from the bustling city is a hidden sanctuary that tells a different story, one of restoration, conservation, and hope.

This week's Utalii Bora feature takes us to Nguuni Nature Sanctuary, where land once scarred by quarrying has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem. Today, giraffes, elands, oryx, waterbucks, ostriches, and hundreds of bird species roam freely, proving that with vision and commitment, nature can flourish once again.

Beyond its wildlife, Nguuni stands out for something even more remarkable. Its education centre, library, health clinic, and community outreach programmes reflect a powerful truth: sustainable tourism is at its best when conservation and community grow together.

🐘 Today, we celebrate Africa’s magnificent giants, while recognising that their survival depends on all of us.

The African Savanna Elephant is classified as Endangered, while the African Forest Elephant is Critically Endangered. Across the continent, elephants continue to face pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation, human–elephant conflict, climate change and illegal wildlife trafficking.

There is, however, reason for hope. Kenya’s elephant population has grown from 36,280 in 2021 to 42,072 in the latest National Wildlife Census by @wrtikenya , an encouraging reflection of sustained conservation efforts, stronger protection and collaborative action.

But conservation cannot stop at the numbers. Around two-thirds of Kenya’s elephants live outside national parks and reserves, sharing landscapes with people. Protecting wildlife corridors, supporting communities and creating space for coexistence are therefore essential to securing their future.

This year’s theme is a powerful reminder that elephant conservation is a shared responsibility. Governments, conservation organisations, communities, travellers and businesses all have a role to play.

🐘 Together, we can protect their habitats, support community-led conservation, combat the illegal ivory trade and promote responsible tourism that gives back to the landscapes and people who safeguard wildlife.

Africa’s lions have disappeared from 92% of their historical range, with an estimated 20,000–30,000 lions remaining across the continent, compared to perhaps 200,000 a century ago.

Here in Kenya, fewer than 2,500 lions remain. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, declining prey, infrastructure development and the impacts of climate change continue to put pressure on these iconic predators.

But there is hope, and conservation partnerships are making a difference.

The August 7th Memorial Park stands not only as a tribute to the lives lost in the 1998 bombing, but also as a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the enduring strength of a nation that chose healing over despair.

Through the eyes of Joseph Kolo, we are reminded that meaningful travel isn't always about seeking breathtaking landscapes or iconic landmarks. Sometimes, it is about visiting places that preserve history, honor memories, and inspire us to build a more peaceful future.
