Challenge yourself to climb Mt. Kenya and experience the exhilaration of trekking Africa’s second highest mountain. Often called Kirinyaga, or place of light, the mountain’s glaciers carve out the throne of Ngai, the old high God of the local Kikuyu people, and there are still some who visit its sacred slopes to offer prayers.
The mountain is an awe-inspiring sight, with its ragged series of snow-crowned peaks and pristine wilderness, offering some of the world’s most beautiful scenery on your trek.
Day 1: Nairobi - Sirimon Track
Depart early from Nairobi with a lunch stop enroute to the National Park gates on the Sirimon Trail. Begin your climb with a 3-4 hour trek to Old Moses Camp (Judmaier) through a beautiful forest filled with East African Pencil Cedar trees, Podocarpus trees, and giant Hargenia trees.
At 3300m (10,827 ft) high, enjoy your dinner and overnight stay surrounded by stunning views towards the summits of Batian and Nelion peaks.
Day 2: Mackinder’s Valley and Shipton’s Caves
An early 5-6 hour walk up Mackinder’s Valley takes you to Shipton’s Caves (4,150 m) (13, 615 ft), a dramatic landscape filled with giant lobelias and towering peaks ahead. During the trek, you’ll also be able to enjoy fantastic distant views and beautiful terrain. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at Shipton’s camp.
Day 3: Shipton’s Camp
Today you’ll spend the day acclimatising, slowing down and disconnecting from the world as you prepare for your following day’s climb to Point Lenana.
You can choose an acclimatization trek to Hausberg Col (4,591 m) (15,062 ft) where you can enjoy splendid views of the rocky towers, tarns, and suspended glaciers of the west face of Batian, or choose the hike to Kami Hut (4,425 m) (14,518 ft), with its lovely alpine lakes and jutting rock formations. Enjoy another night at Shipton’s camp.
Day 4: Point Lenana
A very early start (around 2 am) takes you up the North Ridge to reach Point Lenana (4,985 m) (16,355 ft). The mountain ranges illuminated by the rising sun and the sea of clouds beneath you provides a breathtakingly beautiful scene and is truly a wonder to behold.
Descend to Teleki Valley and enjoy a pleasant walk to Mackinder’s Camp where you’ll eat, unwind and enjoy a good night’s rest after a long day.
Day 5: Mt Kenya - Naro Moru Lodge
Continue your descent this morning along the Naro Moru Track, marked by unique vegetation consisting of giant heather, lobelia, and tussock grass. You’ll reach the Meteorological Station, where you’ll be picked up and transferred by vehicle to Naro Moru River lodge for the night.
Day 6: Naro Moru - Nairobi
Today, you’ll be transferred to Nairobi in the morning, arriving in the city around lunch time.
