🦒 Happy World Giraffe Day 2026!
Today, we celebrate one of Africa’s most iconic species, the giraffe. Kenya is home to three of the world’s four giraffe species: the Masai giraffe that roams our southern savannahs, the striking Reticulated giraffe of northern Kenya, and the rare Nubian giraffe, a subspecies of the Northern giraffe found in protected areas across the country.

Together, Kenya’s giraffe populations account for nearly 30% of all giraffes in Africa, making the country a global stronghold for their conservation. Yet these gentle giants continue to face growing threats from habitat loss, climate change, poaching, and human encroachment. Over the last two decades alone, Masai giraffe populations have declined by more than 50%, while Reticulated giraffe numbers have fallen by approximately 60% as noted by @giraffe_conservation . Despite conservation successes for the Nubian giraffe, their future, and that of all giraffes, depends on continued action.
This World Giraffe Day, let’s celebrate their incredible diversity while committing to protect the landscapes they call home.

This week, we journey to the heart of Northern Kenya, where conservation, culture, and community come together in a remarkable way.

Featured in this week's Utalii Bora blog is Westgate Community Conservancy in Samburu County. This community-owned conservation success story demonstrates how tourism can create meaningful benefits for both people and nature. Established by the local Samburu community, the conservancy protects vital wildlife habitats while supporting livelihoods, education, healthcare, and ecosystem restoration.

Before sustainability became a mainstream conversation in tourism, a group of passionate young changemakers was already exploring Kenya's destinations through a different lens, asking not only where to travel but also how destinations, businesses, and travelers can contribute to a more sustainable future.

✍ In February 2017, the very first Utalii Bora blog was published, marking the beginning of a journey that would grow into one of Kenya's longest-running youth-led sustainable tourism storytelling platforms. Through a partnership between @sttafrica and @letsgotravel_uniglobe, students have been given opportunities to visit destinations, assess sustainability practices, and share their honest travel experiences with the world.

Today, more than 70 blogs later, Utalii Bora remains The Conscious Traveler's Voice on Sustainability in Tourism Products, equipping young tourism professionals with practical sustainability assessment and travel writing skills while showcasing the stories behind Kenya's destinations.

💡 As we launch Lets Go Travel Uniglobe's Utalii Bora Travel Blog Thursdays, we begin where it all started, with the very first blog published in February 2017.

Thank you to every student, mentor, destination partner, and reader who has been part of this journey. Here's to preserving the stories, lessons, and voices that continue to shape responsible tourism in Kenya.
