The recent inscription of the Boma–Badingilo Migra

The recent inscription of the Boma–Badingilo Migratory Landscape as a @unesco World Heritage Site is a landmark moment for global conservation.

Stretching across the vast savannahs and wetlands of South Sudan, this extraordinary landscape supports the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth, where an estimated 6 million antelope, including white-eared kob, tiang, and Mongalla gazelle, move seasonally across the ecosystem in one of nature's greatest spectacles.

This recognition celebrates more than an incredible wildlife phenomenon. It acknowledges the immense ecological value of a landscape that sustains biodiversity, supports local communities, and demonstrates the importance of protecting intact ecosystems for future generations.

As conservation challenges continue to grow, the Boma–Badingilo inscription reminds us that safeguarding these wild places is a shared global responsibility. Last week, we began our Plastic Free July Special by discovering that places of worship can also become places of environmental stewardship. This week, our journey takes us beyond the church grounds and into the very landscapes that inspire us to travel.

We continue that conversation with the 1st Runners-Up blog from the Ink the Change Competition, Plastic Killing Paradise. Paradise isn’t lost overnight. It disappears one plastic bottle, one discarded wrapper, and one careless decision at a time.

From our coastlines and national parks to our forests and communities, Kenya’s natural beauty is what draws travellers from around the world. Yet these same destinations are increasingly threatened by plastic pollution, a challenge that demands action from all of us.

Yet there is hope. Not every waterfall tells the same story. Some remain clean because visitors choose to carry their waste home; communities organize clean-ups, and conservation becomes part of the travel experience. The Great Migration has begun!
The first wildebeest have begun arriving in the Mara ecosystem, making their way through the Sand River into the Mara Triangle. A few early crossings have also been spotted along the Mara River, a thrilling sign of what’s to come.

For now, the herds are still building in numbers, but with every passing day, the spectacle grows closer to its peak. Soon, thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles will surge across the plains and brave crocodile-filled rivers in one of nature’s greatest wildlife events.
