Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking: An Adventure of a Lifetime in Rwanda

6 DAYS/5 NIGHTS

For many people who love adventure and travel, trekking through a jungle in search of a family of gorillas or chimpanzees is high on their bucket list. For the lucky ones who do get to experience this first-hand, it’s a trip where the memories are sure to last a lifetime.

You’ll begin this 6 day itinerary in Kigali, Rwanda’s impressive capital city, often referred to as ‘the land of a thousand hills.’ You’ll continue on into the extraordinary Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park to witness the truly rare and magnificent chimpanzees and gorillas in their natural habitat.

Day 1 - Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you’ll be met by a tour representative and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay in what is arguably one of Africa’s most attractive, clean, and safest cities.

Day 2 - Kigali - Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, spend half a day on a city tour, designed to give you an intimate view of Kigali in a fun and action-packed way. Learn more about Rwanda’s history at the Presidential Palace Museum, visit a bustling craft market, and step inside the truly heart-wrenching Genocide Memorial.

After lunch, depart for Ruhengeri, travelling through fertile green hills and arriving in the early evening at your lodge in Volcanoes National Park for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park - Kibuye

Begin the day at the cultivated foothills of Virunga Mountain, where you will be immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with colorful bird calls and chattering golden monkeys. Weaving through overhanging vines and giant lobelias, you’ll be brought up close to one of the parks’ Gorilla families. For conservation purposes, you can spend up to one hour with them.

After the trek, you’ll rejoin your driver/guide for a transfer to your lodge for lunch before departing to Kibuye, arriving in time for dinner.

Day 4: Kibuye - Nyungwe Forest National Park

After an early breakfast, you’ll travel to one of Africa’s oldest, most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. The majestic Nyungwe Forest is filled with unique nature and wildlife experiences for you to emerge yourself in, including a truly astounding afternoon canopy walk.

Hanging 60 meters above the forest floor between giant trees and towers, the Canopy Walkway provides a stunning view of the park’s unforgettable landscape. After your adventure, return to your lodge for some downtime, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Nyungwe Forest National Park (Chimpanzee Trek)

Begin your chimpanzee search in the early morning, trekking through the misty forest and encountering other primates along the way including the habituated Ruwenzori Black and White Colobus. Once you find the chimpanzee, you’ll spend some time observing their playful and cheeky nature in their natural habitat.

The park is also a birder’s paradise, with over 300 species of birds, which you can spend time enjoying, before returning to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a walk to the tea plantation, before returning for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Nyungwe Forest National Park - Kigali

After breakfast, you’ll drive to Huye, one of Rwanda’s most distinguished towns. Spend some time at the Tin Smith of Huye, admiring the handmade and historically rich products of Rwandese craftsmen, followed by lunch at the Ibis Hotel.

A visit to the former seat of the Rwandan monarchy, the Nyanza King’s Palace, is a great way to break up the lengthy drive between Nyungwe and Kigali, and offers a window into Rwanda’s pre-colonial past. Once you arrive in Kigali, you’ll be transferred to the international airport to catch your scheduled departure flight.
