Welcome to a remarkable 7-day safari adventure through Western Kenya, where you'll experience the captivating beauty of Kisumu, the neighboring islands, Eldoret, Kericho, and Kakamega. This safari package offers an immersive journey, starting and ending in Nairobi, with the option of extending your exploration to the renowned Masai Mara or the breathtaking Kenya coast. Get ready to indulge in diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, cultural encounters, and unforgettable memories.
Day 1: Nairobi – Eldoret
Depart Kenya’s capital city in the early morning to get the unique sunrise shadow at The Great Rift Valley viewpoint being illuminated on the crater Mt. Longonot. Drive the scenic route with a glimpse view of three Great Rift Valley lakes: L. Naivasha, L. Elementaita, and L. Nakuru. This leads you to the Mogotio Equator crossing that portrays the point zero using the world’s globe.
Thinking of calling it a day but wait and see the thrilling dive by local divers at the Cheploch Gorge followed by the magical winding roads leading to the Kerio Valley viewpoint. After the exciting day, the Home of Champions; Eldoret, will make you feel victorious as you eat a hearty meal.
Day 2: Eldoret – Kakamega
While having breakfast, we reflect on how Sosiani River played an impactful role in inspiring Eldoret’s name. The day leads us into the only rainforest in Kenya that is a remnant of the rainforest that stretches across Central Africa; Kakamega forest. Kakamega forest is an unmatched avifauna haven for birds where several species can only be found here as well as 194 forest-dependent species.
The UNESCO World Heritage Center not only classifies the Kakamega forest as a national treasure but also a continental jewel. The richness in flora that will be encountered as you hike the forest while stumbling upon some of the fauna in the forest, is worth including in your memoir. The overnight stay here will have you reminiscing today’s memories, which I hope you would have made them count.
Day 3: Kakamega – Kisumu
We indulge in Western culture by starting the day off at Nabongo Cultural Centre, where we get to know how it feels to be in the great Wanga community. Our next stop gets us to the powerful significance of rocks, where one is crowned as one’s man's first wife; Kit-Mikayi, and the second; The Crying Stone of Illesi, whose story is better consumed from the local community’s perspective.
The Luo dancers at Kisumu Museum will crown our “cultural day” and when the hard-to-resist dancing moods kick in, feel free to join them.
Day 4: Kisumu – Rusinga
By now we have really kept Lake Victoria waiting long enough and it’s rude to keep the queen waiting (Lake Victoria was named in honor of the late Queen Victoria of England), we take a boat ride to explore the Rusinga Island where the hidden gem; Mfangano Island Camp will have us mesmerizing at its uniqueness.
If you are lucky in October or November, you get to experience the eventful Rusinga Island Festival.
Day 5: Rusinga – Kisumu
The Thimlich Ohinga Archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Site embraces the exceptional tradition of massive stone-walled enclosures and was a typical first pastoral community in the Lake Victoria basin from the 16th century to the mid-20th century.
Take a game drive in the undisturbed peace of Ruma National Park, the only Kenyan haven for the majestic and rare roan antelope, is filled with rolling hills, patches of woodlands, and a mix of grasslands. Spending the night at Ruma National Park will give you a stunning view of sunset and sunrise.
Day 6: Kisumu- Kericho
Take a morning drive down towards Kericho. The ever-green tea plantations in Kericho will have you longing to explore them and having a sizzling cup of tea will drive the Western cold breeze away.
Day 7: Nairobi/ Maasai Mara/ Another destination
This morning after breakfast, you get to head back to Nairobi or continue with the spirit of adventure into The Great Maasai Mara National Reserve or fly directly to the Kenyan Coast or any other destination of your choice.
