Every 24 September, we celebrate the gentle giants of Africa's mountain forests and the people who protect them. This year the spotlight is on responsible tourism, healthy habitats, and community-led conservation. The future of mountain gorillas depends on all three.

The numbers show that this approach is working. Decades of ranger patrols, veterinary care, and partnership with the communities around Bwindi and the Virungas have helped mountain gorilla populations grow. This month, Rwanda welcomed 22 newly named baby gorillas at their annual Kwita Izina Festival.

Still, the species is endangered. Every trekking permit helps fund park protection and supports the local communities living alongside these forests. When you trek responsibly, you become part of the conservation story.

This week's feature takes us to Eldoret, the host of #untourismweek2026 , where the "city of champions" is making its case as more than an athletics capital.

Beyond the tracks lies the Eldoret Nature and Culture Centre, established in 2006, blending game watching with a rich cultural showcase, homesteads representing the Nandi, Maasai, Pokot, Kikuyu, Marakwet and Luo communities all in one space.

But beneath the charm, Dominic Wanjiru found a more layered picture. Strategically placed litter bins pointed to thoughtful management, and the centre even rears its own chicken and rabbits to feed the resident snakes, a resourceful, cost-effective practice. Yet not everything was picture perfect: some animals, especially the hyena and lioness, appeared visibly stressed in their enclosures, a reminder that sustainable tourism is as much about animal welfare as it is about clean grounds.

This week's feature takes us into the heart of Nairobi itself, where Sharon Wangari discovered that you don't need to leave the city to disappear into the wild. Nairobi is home to over 600 bird species, one of the highest counts of any city in the world, a fact made possible by its unique claim to being the only capital with a national park within its borders.

Every Wednesday, @nature_kenya Bird Walk gathers birders of every age and experience level at the National Museums of Kenya. Guided by conservationists, the walk turned Sharon from a self-confessed skeptic, who expected to be pointing binoculars at crows, into someone who witnessed a mid-air standoff between a long-crested eagle and a harrier hawk within her first outing.

And perhaps the most memorable takeaway? In just two hours, the group spotted about thirty species, a reminder that some of the richest wildlife encounters are hiding in plain sight, right in the middle of the city.

🦏 In the golden grass of Ol Pejeta, giants still walk.

Not long ago, white rhinos were vanishing from this land, poached for a horn made of nothing more than keratin, the same protein as your fingernails. Today, @olpejeta stands as one of the last strongholds where they can rest in open plains without fear, watched over day and night by rangers who have made protecting them their life’s work.

This is what recovery looks like: a family resting together in the afternoon light, a lone bull stepping forward, unbothered, toward the camera, because for once, nothing is hunting him.

But the story isn’t finished. Fewer than 20,000 southern white rhinos remain in the wild, and their northern cousins are down to just two, both female, both living right here at Ol Pejeta.

Every rhino still standing is proof that when we choose to protect instead of exploit, nature answers back.
