Listen to the call of your adventurous spirit and pack your hiking gear as you head towards Uganda’s exquisite montane rainforests for 6 days of the ultimate wildlife adventure: Chimpanzee and Gorilla Trekking.
Whether it’s because their very existence is under serious threat, or because of their undeniable similarities to humans, face-to-face encounters with the endangered apes of East Africa in their natural habitat is truly astounding and life-changing.
Day 1: Entebbe Airport - Kampala
You’ll be met at Entebbe Airport and transferred to Kampala, Uganda’s most dynamic and compelling city, for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Kampala - Kibale National Park
Take an early morning drive through papyrus swamps and local villages to Kibale National Park which lies under the towering Ruwenzori Mountains.
An afternoon guided walk will lead you through several crater lakes, local villages, tea plantations and waterfalls. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of the Rwenzori Mountains, more often known as the fabled Mountains of the Moon. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park - Queen Elizabeth National Park
Begin your chimpanzee search in the early morning, trekking through dense forest and encountering other primates along the way, including the black and white Colobus, grey-cheeked Mangabey, and red-tailed monkey. Once you spot the chimpanzee, you’ll spend some mesmerizing time observing as they swing from trees, feed, play, or progress speedily on the ground in front of you (you might have to progress rapidly too!).
After chimp trekking, you’ll drive to Queen Elizabeth Park for a relaxing, evening boat cruise along the famous Kazinga Channel, where, in the golden light of dusk, elephants, buffalo, waterbuck and Uganda kob congregate to quench their thirst. Return to your lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park - Bwindi Forest National Park
As the high mountains of Rwenzori are lit up by sunrise, begin an early morning game drive along Queen’s Mile and Kasenyi Trail, where you’ll witness the rugged and spectacular beauty of the Western Rift Valley Escarpment.
Travel through the remote and surreal landscape of Ishasha, famous for its tree-climbing lions, reaching your lodge in Bwindi Forest National Park for an overnight stay.
Day 5: Bwindi Forest National Park (Gorilla Trekking)
Early breakfast before driving to the Park’s headquarters for a Gorilla trekking briefing. Enter the thick green jungle and trek through mist and dense forest on your way to finding where the family of gorillas probably last nested (where they slept the night) then track them from there.
Uganda’s mountain gorillas are mesmerizing to watch: youngsters chase each other and swing in trees, vines, and mums dote on their infants, as the awe-inspiring silverback (male) watches over them all. For conservation purposes, the time allowed with them is one hour. After which you’ll clamber out of the thicks of the forest, return to your lodge and reminisce on your close encounters with these truly beautiful endangered beasts. Dinner, and overnight stay.
Optional Activity: Afternoon village walk
Day 6: Bwindi Forest National Park - Entebbe
Return to Kampala in the early morning, before continuing on to Entebbe with a stopover for lunch. Visit the fascinating Igongo Cultural Centre, set on the grounds of the former palace of the Ankole King.
Immerse yourself in the rich history and truly captivating culture and modern lifestyle of the Ankole and Bahima
