Conquering Mt Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Route

Mt. Kilimanjaro is a mystery adorned in clouds and its magnificent snowy peaks stand imperious, overseeing the entire content. Not only is this the highest peak in Africa, but also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, and those who conquer it rightfully earn their climbing certificates - and their incredible memories.

The Lemosho Route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting visitors panoramic vistas and walks through pristine rainforest, with a good chance of seeing wildlife. Some come to conquer this winter wonderland of ice and snow, and stand on the roof of Africa.

Day 1: Mountain Inn Moshi

Arrive in the historical and charming town of Moshi, Tanzania, also known as the Gateway to Kilimanjaro. You’ll arrive at Mountain Inn Lodge, where you’ll meet your mountain guide (and cheerleader for the week!) for a pre-climb briefing. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 2: Lemosho Glades - Mti Mkubwa Camp

Begin your 3-4 hour climb through the forests of the Lemosho glades (2,100m/6,889 ft), an unspoilt, remote, and truly beautiful way up the mountain. Once you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, you’ll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp - Shira One Camp (3,596m/11,200 ft)

This morning, continue through the pristine rainforest, steeply climbing into the mysterious heather and moorland zone, crossing the Shira Ridge and descending into the great expanse of the Shira Plateau, an ancient caldera that expired half a million years ago.

After a 4-5 hour trek, you’ll reach Shira One Camp, where you’ll have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Shira One Camp - Shira Two Camp (3,847m/12,621 ft)

Today, enjoy a slow paced and truly awe-inspiring hike across the old lands of the Shira Plateau, comprised of deep valleys and weather beaten-lava flows, reminiscent of a time and place long gone. As you ascend, catch your first view of the stunning ice-frosted cliffs of Kibo.

The 3-5 hour trek takes you to Shira Two Camp, where you’ll have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Shira Two Camp - Barranco Camp (3,960m/12,992 ft)

As you continue your trek east, you will pass through Oehler Ridge, where swirls of clouds tease and tantalize you with glimpses of the summit, until you reach Lava Tower, an towering orange-black formation that reminds you of Mt. Kilimanjaro’s eruptive past.

You’ll reach Barranco Camp after 7-8 hours of hiking, where you can settle in for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Barranco Camp - Barafu Camp (4,650m/15,255 ft)

Today you will enter the strangely beautiful and ethereal alpine desert zone, climbing the steep Barranco Wall. Rising 800 ft above the valley, this is a thrilling and truly challenging climb that offers you a heart-stopping view from its top.

After 7-8 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Barafu Camp, where you can put your feet up under the stars and enjoy a good night’s rest.

Day 7: Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341 ft)

Around midnight, walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers, arriving on the crater rim at Stella Point, just as the first rays of the sun begin to warm you. Spend an hour climbing, surrounded by spectacular ice-cliffs, as you arrive at the final summit of Uhuru Peak. When you reach the Roof of Africa, take a moment to enjoy the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment and the incredible beauty around you.

Begin your descent by returning to Stella point and then track back through the heather and mysterious moorland, before reaching Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: Mweka Camp - Mountain Inn Moshi
